Summer softball game

Well, we've produced four of the eight weekly papers this summer, and to celebrate this and the summer in general, the business manager and I have decided to schedule a summer addie-newsie softball game. (Geez that was a long sentence, and probably not gramatically correct. But hey, it's the summer.)

While J.R. Giddens is not returning to KU next year, a few of us will also not be returning but that doesn't mean we can't beat the addies at softball and drink beer. And for those of you who are returning, this game is for everyone, including you. And although it won't technically change our record, this summer game should be good fun and maybe give you something to brag on.

The game is going to be scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, July 9. The game will be played at Hobbs Park, 11th and Delaware streets.

Later that same afternoon (about an hour after the game ends), I'll be holding a BBQ on my porch, front lawn and South Park. (200 W. 12th St. -- corner or 12th and Vermont) Hopefully, we'll celebrate a victory, but if not we can celebrate the summer or my impending pseudo-graduation. (I've got to find a job! A real one.)

If I get enough interest in the game and BBQ, I'll be purchasing a keg. Otherwise, you'll be left to your own devices. If you think you'd be interested in playing, please e-mail me so I know we'll have at least ten players. If you're interested in watching and/or going to the BBQ, e-mail me as well so I can get an approximate headcount.

This message is now too long. I hope to see many of you there, but for those I don't, have a great summer.

Watch out world, here I come,
Andrew

Will somebody please tell Vaupel to stop using "hopefully" as a sentence modifier? He won't listen to me.

That one's going to go the way of [insert another grammatical convention that's now obsolete] pretty soon. Hopefully doesn't bother me as much as, say, "over" used non-spatially. -PP
Happy Fourth of July, y'all.

I, and anyone over 60, should have no problem with "hopefully." I would say the same for "over." American Heritage lists 14 definitions for "over," not just meaning "above." (On the cover, it says -- gasp -- "over 70,000 entries"!) "The movie is over" doesn't mean it's floating above something. Hopefully these silly usage debates will be over soon.

I guess I'm over 60 in my heart. Over still pisses me off. Sigh. -PP

I hope that you all will read the AP stylebook. Bremner, who lived to be more than 60 years old, is also instructive. And you overusers of "over," if you're coming back in the fall, will have Austin to deal with.

Kealing, promise me you'll never bow to the one-meaning-per-word contingent and change "over 60 years old" to "more than 60 years old." I suppose some of you drive "more than 55 miles an hour," too.

What do these have in common?:

"O.K., Japan Isn't Taking Over the World. But China..."

"Investigations Swirl Over Medical School's Finances"

"Boy, 15, Dies In a Dispute Over an Ipod"

"Ukraine's Top Assets Are the Spoils in a Post-Election Power Struggle That's Far From Over"

Answer: They're all headlines in today's New York Times -- not what I would call a poorly edited newspaper.

I find that people who proclaim themselves "over" Nazis don't really have a good grasp on copy editing or language, so they must grasp at things like this to convey their purported importance.

It's 3:30 a.m. and I'm not drunk. WTF?

It's crap like this that keeps these wannabe wordsmiths in business.

Perhaps we can all get a chuckle from this, from yesterday's Miami Herald:

Sometimes, a comma can make all the difference.

"Say 'NO' to Drugs from the NMB Police D.A.R.E Officers" read the signs, in bold red and white lettering, on bus benches throughout North Miami Beach.

Makes you want to pause -- the thought of a police department supplying illegal substances to the public.

Ehren Meditz knows his shit, as regards copy editing and pretty much anything else. The rest of us are just interlopers. That's my conclusion. With over six months as a real reporter.
