Weirdest. Internship. Opportunity. Evar.
Do you like writing things?
Do you like Afghanis?
Are you not very particular about your living expenses?
Then maybe you can intern for the Embassy of Afghanistan.
The Embassy of Afghanistan is looking for qualified candidates to fill key unpaid internship positions for the fall, spring and summer semesters.
The Media Relations Intern position is certain to be a worthwhile learning
experience that will allow the selected candidate to see, first-hand, the role
of the U.S. government in the ongoing reconstruction efforts in
Afghanistan and the region.
General Duties and Responsibilities: The Media Relations
Intern supports the Media Relations Officer in all of his/her administrative
responsibilities. Further, the intern assists Media Relations Officer in logistical
coordination, research, monitoring the national media for coverage of Afghanistan, and writing content for the Embassy newsletter and website. S/he also maintains the Department's contact information databases both for the media and the public, while ensuring that the newsletter is widely distributed. Further responsibilities will be tailored to the individual interests of the intern and may encompass other departments in the Embassy.
But wait...there's more...
Other duties include: Assisting in drafting press statements of the Embassy and coordinating interview requests for the President and Cabinet Ministers with Kabul and U.S. counterparts; Track developing news in Afghanistan and update the Embassy website accordingly; Representing the Department at the Embassy events to assist and build relations with the reporters, while guiding and
supervising their crew to set up their equipment; Organizing and taking minutes of the monthly internal press meeting with the Ambassador and other senior Embassy officials; Assisting in compiling data and drafting The Embassy of Afghanistan Bi-Weekly Newsletter; Coordinating with other departmental staff to ensure they regularly contribute stories to the newsletter; Maintaining records of incoming and outgoing media correspondence including those of the Ambassador and other Embassy officials; and the Media Relations internship will have an administrative component.
....and more...
While efforts will be made to ensure that the intern has a fulfilling, challenging experience, there will be routine filing, data entry and photocopying as necessary.
Sadly, you would not be paid for any of this. But hey... a free Afghan lunch is provided every day to all staff and free parking is available as well.!!!
So there is such a thing as a free lunch after all...
I mock this, yes, but it actually is kind of cool (in an unpaid, starving in D.C. sort of way), so if you are interested...
submit your completed application along with your essay, official or unofficial school transcript and letters of recommendation (2) to:
