To all KC/Lawrence people

Hey guys, it's Doyle. I know this is last minute, but Brent and I are having a housewarming party/engagement party and of course the Kansan crew is invited. It is Saturday night (April 29) and you can show up anytime after 7 p.m. I live off of Roe on 61 St (4612 W 61 St). There will be food and booze.

Nerd alert

We got the new 2005 AP stylebooks today at work. Apparently, the good folks at the AP got tired of looking up fundraiser, or were just as confused as the rest of us why it was fund-raiser but fundraising, so they changed it to just fundraiser. In all cases.

This takes me back to when they took the hyphen out of teenager.

Sigh.

Cross (ha!) me off the list, Vaupel

Here's the Bill update:

I just (like, 45 minutes ago) accepted a full-time sports copy editing position with the Lawrence Journal-World. As many of you know, I've been part-timing there since October, and I'll be doing mostly the same things, but getting paid four times as much. Yay for that.

I'm planning to move back to Lawrence this August, so if anyone knows of any nice two-bedroom apartments near downtown, let me know please :^).

Outside of work, life is good. I have recently become a demigod of yoga. And I put a hammock up on my patio that has changed my life with its simple comfort. And I'm engaged.

The last part was obviously a lie.

Has anyone seen my tennis ball?

Go West, My Son

Not to steal any glory from Prada Paige and her glorious taking of power in the New York magazine business, but I'm going to coin a new phrase and let the beaver out of the bag.

I have accepted a general assignment position at the Herald and News in Klamath Falls, Ore. today. This comes after several days struggling whether to stay here in Kansas and work for the Garden City Telegram or go to a completely different place I've never been and have some adventures before I can't do that anymore.

It seriously was a difficult decision.

Anyhow, I'll be leaving right after graduation, as it takes 26 hours to get there by car. Road Trip Extravaganza!

The paper itself is around 15,000 circulation, morning 7-day daily. It's owned by the same company that owns Kellis' paper in Idaho, the Idaho State Journal. I was told by the editor that they'll be moving into a new facility in several months.

To give a rundown of what the town is like, I like to think of it as a more blue collar Lawrence. There's a four-year technical college and a community college in town, and even a school of cosmetology. Hello, shitty yet cheap haircuts! The town's about an hour from Crater Lake and from the Lava Beds in northern California. It's about three hours from the coast. The town has 20,000 in the city limits but a total of 45,000 in its "urban growth area," whatever that means.

The best part about moving to Oregon, though, was brought to my attention by my dad. He noted that lots of things up there are named after my families mascot. Hell, it's even the state animal. But no one has that last name for the most part. I will be a king among them. Or so I can hope.

I'm out.

The University Daily Kansan

... start spreadin' the news?

So, for those of you who live in a cave: I was offered a magazine job in New York City, and I'm moving in about a month. Eee! I'd tell you the name of the company, but you wouldn't know it anyway. It's a start, though, and I'm starting as "assistant editor," not "editorial assistant."
Isn't it amazing how just switching the words can change things completely?
I couldn't write anything here until now because, y'know, it's a public blog. Who knows who else might be reading this?
But then everyone at work found out anyway. Because I have a huge mouth.

So, that's exciting. If anybody knows of a sublet available in the area until August 1, let me know.
In other news, anyone on LiveJournal who wants to add a Kansas blog feed to their friends list can do so by visiting this URL: http://syndicated.livejournal.com/udkpressclub/profile

That is all. Happy Friday.

Back-to-back posts are dorky, I know, but ...

I just got a raise. The kind of raise that makes you say "holy shit" when your boss hands you the form with the numbers on it.

Almost makes ya wanna cry

The sports section of my paper misspelled four words in four headlines in the same edition last month —— three which would have been caught by spellcheck.

Grrr...

So the boss insisted on running a story that we didn't have enough information for. The rest of us editors were hesistant, but our opinion didn't matter. Now we are making headline news. This is the second day we have been discussed on Good Morning America. We are the paper the reported the six babies that were actually fake.

Not bad

Thanks Ashley for being the first in what I hope will turn into a long line of updates. And more importantly, congratulations!

Paige, I love your stories -- the Match.com experience cracked me up. I hope your interview goes well and do call if you want. (Marissa and Ashley Doyle updated me.)

Donovan scores the Sunday section and a boyfriend. Damn!

The Mason-Dixon line is lucky to have you, Nate.

AKS and PP thanks for bringing the humor back.

Not bad
Ok, so that's a start. How much will I have to pressure people to write updates? (I'm shitty at responding to e-mails right now, so this is great!)

So here's the shout-outs. Marissa, Michelle, Rylan, Courtney, John Schierman, Bill, Steve, Robinett, Ralston, Jared, Andy, Amanda "Smoky Pants" and "That's what she said," Laura, Neil, Neeley, Bechard, Austin, Misty in NYC, Ingber. (That's a good start, but everyone knows that's just the end of my Kansan history. With the next edition, I'll bring some real oldies!)

Nate, now just get all those other lucky college kids to do the update thing. Ty, Jonathan, Bickel, Sorrentino, DBerk, Azita, Wacker, Shaad, Becca, Rachel, Kit, Erin, Dani, Estuardo. I'm sure I missed a few people, but just put up a sign -- those usually work. (I'm sure some of them have never even seen this site.)

Goodnight,
Andrew

Re:

In response to my comment on Paige's post: AAAAAIIIIIEEEEE!!!!!

Sorry y'all, but I won't be needing facebook anymore.

AKS

I am a 15-year-old boy.

So, I was brainstorming ideas for our skybox promos, and the story is a pet grooming service.
ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, I come up with this:

I think I need to go work at the Onion or something.

Update on Nate's boots (per request from Vaupel)...

...They're still kickin'. Hopefully I'll get to buy a better pair now that I HAVE A JOB! That's right, y'all, I'm moving to Clarksville, Tenn., right after graduation. I'm going to be a reporter for The Leaf-Chronicle, covering county government and school governance. My first day is May 30.

Clarksville and The Leaf-Chronicle have just about everything (and more) that I wanted for my first job and location after college. First it was below the Mason-Dixon, which was numero uno on my list. I love Lawrence, but my heart lies in Dixie :-)Clarksville has 150,000 residents and is the third-fastest growing city in Tennessee, behind only Memphis and Nashville, so it's about the same size as Lawrence.

Clarksville calls itself the "Gateway to the New South" because it combines an Old South charm with a progressive atmosphere. The town is very, very Christian, though (downtown was a ghost town when I visited on a Sunday), but it's 45 minutes from Nashville so synagogues are nearby. Clarksville, which forms a horseshoe underneath Fort Cambell in Kentucky, is mostly blue collar and military so the cost of living is very affordable. Erin and I are looking at townhouses for 600 bucks! Erin will move to Clarksville when she graduates in December. Clarksville is also ideal for her situation. Because Austin Peay (pronounced like "pea") State University (famous for its cheer: "Let's go Peay!") is in Clarksville so Erin can either get a masters in education or try to work at its financial aid office. She also has Nashville to look for jobs.

Even sweeter is that The Tennessean, Nashville's newspaper, is owned by Gannett. So I'll have an opportunity to move to a bigger city newspaper a couple years out.

I don't having a job will really hit me until the beginning of May when other graduates are cramming for jobs. I can then just sit back and relax (actually I'll probably be freaking out over how to get started on a high-demanding career in a town that I don't know)! But I'm really excited to start my career in Middle Tennessee and see where that takes me.

I have to go to class now (only because attendance is fucking mandatory) but I'll try to update later.

Ashley Doyle's new update

I'm engaged!
